Neodymium Cylinder Magnet - 5mm x 20mm | N45

Magnetic Product Description:

This long and narrow Neodymium Cylinder magnet produces an intense and targeted magnetic field. Cylinders magnets such as this are also referred to as Rod magnets and the strong N45 grade of this specific magnet make it a particularly powerful magnet for its size.

Uses for our rare earth cylinder magnets:

The combination of these magnets 20mm length and the narrow 5mm diameter create an unusual and unique magnet that is suitable for use in both electrical engineering and mechanical applications. Its small surface area makes the holding ability weaker than a disc-shaped magnet of similar magnetic material content due to discs having a larger contact area. However, the narrow and penetrative magnetic field produced by cylindrical magnets makes them highly suited for use in sensitive equipment or applications where precision and accuracy are key. Cylinder magnets are suited to metal extraction, electric motors, generators, magnetic switches and alarm systems.
Cylinder magnets such as these are also easily embedded into other materials such as wood, plastic or composite material, where they can be simply glued into a drilled hole of the same diameter and then bond with a metal component or another magnet Neodymium material is the basis of the strongest magnets available today and it has largely replaced more traditional magnetic materials such as Ferrite and Alnico due to the superior strength produced from a much more compact form.

The most common coating for Neodymium magnets is Nickel + Copper + Nickel (Ni + Cu + Ni). This coating offers the magnet relatively good protection from corrosion and passive applications. If the magnet will be exposed to moisture or liquid then consider the use of an organic coating such as Epoxy. A hard wearing coating, Epoxy is suited to applications where the magnet will come under some friction or knocking.

Magnets are readily available in Blocks, Discs, Cylinders & Rings. AMF Magnetics specializes in the supply of short-run prototype magnets including Arc Segments, various magnetic orientations etc. If you need a magnet size that we don't carry in stock, submit a Design-a-Magnet enquiry for a quote on your custom magnet design.

Neodymium magnets are offered in several different grades. The first section N30-54 has an operating temperature of up to 80 degrees. Most of our stock only goes up to N38. The second section, denoted with the "M" prefix after the grade has an operating temperature 100 degrees. After this the grades are "H", "SH", "UH" & "EH". In order for the magnet to withstand a higher operating temperature, during production more of the raw material PrNd is incorporated as these elements have a naturally occurring resistance to high temperatures.
