Making a magnetic knife holder is simple and rewarding. You just need the right tools, the right magnets and a few basic skills. So, let’s get started!
Wooden Magnetic Knife Holder
You’ll need:
-
A wooden board (hardwood like Jarrah, Blackbutt, Tasmanian oak)
-
Strong neodymium magnets
-
Wood glue or epoxy
-
Drill with a Forstner bit (ideally same diameter as the magnets)
-
Sandpaper
-
Wood finish (food grade)
-
Mounting hardware (screws, anchors, or a French cleat system)
Directions:
1. Mark Magnet Placement: On the back of the board, mark where you’ll place the magnets. Space them evenly to accommodate different knife sizes (e.g., 2–3 inches apart). Ensure the magnets are close enough to the surface to hold knives securely.
2. Drill Holes for Magnets: Use a drill with a Forstner bit to create shallow holes at each marked spot. You may find that this is approxiamtely 3mm from the front surface of the wood.
3. Insert Magnets: Place the magnets into the holes. Test with a knife to ensure it holds securely to the front. Secure the magnets into the back of the board with wood glue or epoxy. Let the adhesive cure fully as per the instructions on the packaging.
4. Finish the Wood: Sand the entire board again using progressively finer grits of sandpaper. Apply a food-safe finish like mineral oil or beeswax for protection and enhanced appearance.
5. Mount the Holder: Attach mounting hardware to the back of the board. Secure the holder to the wall using screws or a French cleat system, ensuring it’s level. Adjust if necessary and then stand back and admire your handiwork!
