Small Electromagnets

AMF Magnetics supply small Electromagnets in a variety of sizes to buy online. Our super strong Electromagnets use DC power. Unlike Permanent Magnets, the strength of the magnet can be altered by the amount of electricity that flows through an Electromagnet.

Electromagnets are built by wrapping many coils of wire around a ferromagnetic core material. When an electric current flows through a conductor an Electromagnet is created with the magnetic field produced around the conductor.

Our range of Electromagnets can be used for handling and holding metal objects in manual and automated applications. Manual applications include welding jigs where they are required to clamp and release steel frames and fixtures. They can also be used for automation or robotic applications such as small lifting apparatus, gate locks, fire doors, isolators, etc.

FAQ

How do electromagnets work?
Electromagnets convert direct electrical current into mechanical force and motion by generating a controllable magnetic field. This ability makes them invaluable across a wide range of industrial and technological applications, including metal detection, sorting, water filtration, and various electronic systems. The strength of the magnetic field can be controlled by adjusting the current, making them versatile and responsive for various applications. The power to activate or deactivate the magnetic field on demand gives operators precise control over magnetic interactions, improving safety, efficiency and responsiveness in systems that rely on magnetic force.

What are small electromagnets used for?
Small electromagnets are commonly used in lifting applications, educational demonstrations and semi-automated systems. Their ability to be switched on and off with electric current makes them ideal for applications like locks, valves, relays, and precision lifting or sorting mechanisms. In water treatment, electromagnets are used to capture and later release impurities such as heavy metals, rust, and mineral salts. This process allows contaminants to be held securely until they can be properly removed, enabling high-volume water systems to be filtered effectively. For instance, hard water, which is laden with minerals, can be transformed into soft, usable water through this method. In security systems, magnetic locks powered by electromagnets remain securely engaged without a power supply, making them nearly impossible to breach without authorised electrical input, such as during non-business hours.

Can small electromagnets be powered by batteries?
Yes, small electromagnets can be powered by batteries, especially in portable or low-voltage applications. The power source must match the voltage and current requirements of the electromagnet to ensure safe and effective operation.

Are small electromagnets safe to use?
When used correctly, small electromagnets are safe. However, users should avoid overheating, overloading or using incorrect power supplies. In educational settings, supervision is highly recommended, especially when higher currents or voltages are involved.
