Why are some magnets plastic-coated? 
Plastic coating makes the magnet more durable and resistant to corrosion and environmental damage. The plastic coating can also enhance magnetic performance by providing a smoother surface and reducing friction. Plastic coated magnets offer specific benefits, such as reducing surface damage during attachment or improving chemical resistance and the general durability of the magnet. 

What is the plastic coating made from? 
Plastic-coated magnets are created by encasing the magnetic material in a layer of plastic, typically using materials like ABS, PVC or Polyurethane. This coating protects the magnet from physical damage and corrosion, provides a more pleasing aesthetic finish, and can be moulded into various shapes and sizes to suit different applications. 

Does plastic coating on a magnet reduce its magnetic strength?  
The coatings give magnets extra durability but in some cases the coatings can influence the magnetic hold. Any coating will create a distance between the magnet and the ferrous object it is attracted to. Nickel and other metal coatings will help transfer the magnetic field, rubber and plastic won’t. Instead, the plastic coating will maintain constant separation between the magnetic field and the object being acted upon.  That means less risk of damage to a surface, and other benefits of the magnet being coated, but it will create a distance between the two surfaces which can slightly weaken the magnetic hold.
