Plastic Coated Magnets

Injection moulding allows the regular magnet coating to be encased with plastic creating an almost unbreakable protective cover between the magnet and a ferrous metallic surface. Moisture cannot permeate the seal of the plastic coated magnet. This seal greatly increases the life of the magnet as it protects it from corrosive elements.
The plastic coat is thick and therefore reduces the actual magnetic pull force of the internal magnet. This is due to the extra space created between the magnet and the ferrous surface. The plastic magnets for sale on our website include plastic fridge magnets and a pair of plastic coated Neodymium magnets in a countersunk ring shape.

Plastic coated magnets allow for the attachment and removal of the magnet from delicate surfaces without causing damage. The plastic coating also prevents scratching or chipping of the magnet, eliminating problems associated with abrasion, moisture and collision.
Neodymium magnets are prone to corrosion if exposed to humidity, water or salt water. They are also brittle in nature and the plastic coating, particularly on long magnets such as plastic coated bar magnets, helps to protect the magnet. It reduces the risk of the magnet breaking due to impact.

Plastic coated magnets are a good option for customers who wish to glue the magnet onto another object. The plastic case provides good adherence for many forms of adhesive.
Gluing magnets can be at times problematic. We advise customers to review the information provided by the adhesive supplier to ensure it is compatible with magnets. The strength of the magnetic hold can cause the adhesive to fail if the glue used is not strong enough or applied accurately.

Plastic refrigerator magnets

One of our most popular products for home and office users is our thermoplastic coated button magnets. These are specifically designed as plastic refrigerator magnets or whiteboard magnets. The strong Neodymium magnets inside these button magnets means they are able to hold up to 10 sheets of A4 paper on a vertical surface.
These plastic coated fridge magnets come in a range of colours so you can choose the colour that suits your decor. Alternatively you can use the full range of colours to create a colour coded communication system.

Custom magnets

Plastic coated magnets can be tinted to any colour. Plastic fridge magnets are a fantastic option for companies looking to make marketing materials that won’t be thrown in the bin immediately. The highly useful nature of these magnets mean they are likely to be in use on your customer’s whiteboard or fridge for many years to come. If you would like to know more about ordering custom magnets please get in contact with our sales team, we are always happy to help.

FAQ

Why are some magnets plastic-coated?
Plastic coating makes the magnet more durable and resistant to corrosion and environmental damage. The plastic coating can also enhance magnetic performance by providing a smoother surface and reducing friction. Plastic coated magnets offer specific benefits, such as reducing surface damage during attachment or improving chemical resistance and the general durability of the magnet.

What is the plastic coating made from?
Plastic-coated magnets are created by encasing the magnetic material in a layer of plastic, typically using materials like ABS, PVC or Polyurethane. This coating protects the magnet from physical damage and corrosion, provides a more pleasing aesthetic finish, and can be moulded into various shapes and sizes to suit different applications.

Does plastic coating on a magnet reduce its magnetic strength?
The coatings give magnets extra durability but in some cases the coatings can influence the magnetic hold. Any coating will create a distance between the magnet and the ferrous object it is attracted to. Nickel and other metal coatings will help transfer the magnetic field, rubber and plastic won’t. Instead, the plastic coating will maintain constant separation between the magnetic field and the object being acted upon.  That means less risk of damage to a surface, and other benefits of the magnet being coated, but it will create a distance between the two surfaces which can slightly weaken the magnetic hold.

Where are plastic coated magnets used?
Plastic coated magnets are used wherever the magnet needs to be protected from the environment, corrosion, chemicals or impact. The plastic coating also allows magnets to be coloured, making them useful in classrooms, offices, warehouses, retail settings and homes. Plastic coated magnets are also used in industry and agriculture, even in prawn farms to efficiently separate brine shrimp from their casings. Plastic coated magnets are ideal for many marine applications because it makes them resistant to saltwater corrosion.
